The draw has been made for the first knockout phase of both the Champions League and Europa League and the forthcoming ties have thrown up some interesting fixtures for the English contingent. Here at Compare Betting Sites we take a look at what challenges lie ahead for all of the Premier League’s representatives and provide up to date first leg and outright odds on both competitions, courtesy of our betting partner, William Hill.

UEFA Champions League: Round of 16

Real Madrid vs MANCHESTER CITY

Real Madrid were the big drifters in the betting market after the 13-time winners were drawn against tournament favourites, Manchester City. Madrid’s reign as the dominant team in European football looks to be over with their ageing stars struggling during the early months of the season. In the Champions League group stage, Madrid finished a distant second to Paris Saint Germain in Group A and suffered an embarrassing 5-0 loss in Paris.

In contrast, Manchester City are the team to beat in this year’s competition. Pep Guardiola and the City hierarchy have made no secret of the fact that winning the Champions League is their ultimate goal. City eased into the knockout phase with a game to spare and with their Premier League defence all-but-over, the Champions League will become their priority in the new year.

Only Robert Lewandowski (10) and Harry Kane (6) have scored more goals than Sterling and remain in the competition. Lewandowski is a huge odds-on favourite to claim the Golden Boot but Sterling could prove the better value. With five goals already in this season’s competition, Raheem Sterling is a superb outside bet in the top scorer market.

Match odds (first leg)

Real Madrid – 17/10

Draw – 13/5

Manchester City – 29/20

Atletico Madrid vs LIVERPOOL

Like their cross-city rivals, Atletico Madrid are arguably not the force they were a couple of years ago. The loss of Antoine Griezmann and Diego Godin has hurt Atletico and defending champions, Liverpool, will be confident of progression. No side to reach the knockout phase scored less goals than the eight goals scored by Atletico in the group stage.

After enduring a near-30 year wait for a domestic league title, Liverpool’s priority this season will be in claiming a maiden Premier League crown. However, Jurgen Klopp has assembled one of the strongest squads in Europe and the Reds are more than capable of competing on both fronts.

Match odds (first leg)

Atletico Madrid – 9/5

Draw – 9/4

Liverpool – 6/4

CHELSEA vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich charged into the knockout phase in record-breaking fashion. The German giants won all six group games, scoring 24 and conceding just five. Leading marksman, Robert Lewandowski is the tournament’s top scorer having found the back of the net ten times in the group stage. In fact, the prolific Pole personally out-scored six of the sixteen teams left in the competition. Lewandowski is now as short as 1/20 to finish as top scorer in this season’s tournament.

2012 winners, Chelsea, will be considered by many as the dark horses in the competition. The Blues are one of the few sides remaining that are unlikely to be involved in an energy-sapping title race on their domestic league, leaving them fresh for any continental challenges that come their way. Frank Lampard’s side will also be boosted by the lifting of their current transfer ban in January. If the rumours are to be believed, owner, Roman Abramovic, could be about the sanction a huge transfer kitty in the January window.

Chelsea’s Achilles heel this season has been their leaky defence. The Blues have one of the worst defensive records in both the Premier League and Champions League this seasonThe return from injury of German international, Antonio Rudiger, could ease Lampard’s concerns, however they may still be in the market for further defensive reinforcements.

Match odds (first leg)

Chelsea – 12/5

Draw – 11/4

Bayern Munich - Evens

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs RB Leipzig

Spurs’ clash with RB Leipzig promises to be an intriguing one. On paper, Leipzig should progress. Spurs were second best in both group games against Bayern Munich, losing 7-2 and 3-1 and now they come up against a side four point and two places ahead of Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga table. However, this is no ordinary Spurs team. Last season’s beaten finalists are now led by two-time Champions League-winning coach, Jose Mourinho.

The Special One became a household name when guiding his unfancied Porto side to Champions League glory in 2004 before repeating that triumph at Inter Milan six years later. Another Champions League triumph will see Mourinho join an esteemed list of just three managers to claim a hat-trick of wins; joining Bob Paisley (1977, 1978 & 1981), Carlo Ancelotti (2003, 2007 & 2014) and Zinedine Zidane (2016, 2017 & 2018). Mourinho could become the first manager to win the competition with three different clubs. Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, is also chasing a third win having lifted the Champions League trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.

Match odds (first leg)

Tottenham Hotspur – Evens

Draw – 27/10

RB Leipzig – 12/5

If you fancy our English contingent to fare well again this season then why not place a bet on an all-English final? A second successive Champions League final to be contested by two teams from England is 5/1.

UEFA Europa League: Round of 32

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS vs Espanyol

Wolves have impressed in their first European adventure since 1981, narrowly missing out on top spot in Group K to Braga. Wolves won both home and away against Slovan Bratislava and Besiktas and will be heavy favourites against a struggling Espanyol team.

Espanyol topped Group H ahead of Ludogorets, Ferencvaros and CSKA Moscow but are currently rooted to the foot of the La Liga table after making their worst start to a domestic campaign. Their home form is a major cause for concern and the Spaniards are now winless at the RCDE Stadium since August in the league. In Europe Espanyol have not fared much better, winning just once in their three home games.

Espanyol conceded just four times in the Europa League group stage and will be reliant on a strong defensive performance if they are to progress from their clash with Wolves. Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota scored two goals apiece in the group stage and will again be Wolves’ main goal threat against Espanyol.

Match odds (first leg)

Wolverhampton Wanderers – 3/4

Draw – 27/10

Espanyol – 18/5

Olympiakos vs ARSENAL

Manager-less Arsenal are in a state of chaos at the moment and are yet to appoint a permanent successor to Unai Emery. Current Manchester City assistant, Mikel Arteta, looks set to return to the club where he spent five years as a player and he’ll have almost two months with the squad before they head to Athens.

Last season’s losing finalists will hope to go one better this season and with their indifferent form in the Premier League, winning this competition will perhaps offer the Gunners their greatest opportunity of featuring in next season’s Champions League. It is now 26 years since Arsenal last won a major European tournament, a run extending back to their success in the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup in 1993/94.

Arsenal’s main worry will be the pending January transfer window. Club captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has been linked with a move away from the Emirates next month and would leave a huge void in the front line.

Opponents, Olympiakos, entered the knockout stage of the Europa League having finished third Group B of their Champions League group behind Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur. The Greek club threw away a two-goal lead when they took on Spurs in north London and having lost all three away games in the Champions League this season, they are likely to need a positive result at home to Arsenal in the first leg if they are to make it through to the last-16.

Match odds (first leg)

Olympiakos – 2/1

Draw – 13/5

Arsenal – 5/4

Club Brugge vs MANCHESTER UNITED

Manchester United used the Europa League group stage as an opportunity to field several academy starlets but having topped Group L they have been installed as the bookies’ 11/2 favourites to win a second Europa League title in four seasons. Like Arsenal, Europa League glory is likely to offer Manchester United a far more realistic route into next season’s Champions League and also like the Gunners, United will face a team dropping down from the Champions League.

Manchester United’s last-32 opponents are Belgian side, Club Brugge. Drawn in Group A of the Champions League alongside European heavyweights, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain, it always seemed the Club Brugge were in a straight head-to-head battle with Galatasaray for third place in the group and a safe passage into the Europa League and so it turned out. Club Brugge drew home and away against Galatasaray but finished one point clear of the Turkish outfit after holding out for a hard-earned 2-2 draw against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Teenager, Mason Greenwood, scored four times in the group stage for Manchester United and after being described as “almost undroppable” by Red Devils boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, we are tipping the youngster to be back amongst the goals in the knockout stage. Check out the latest Golden Boot odds with William Hill or alternatively, you may want to consider Greenwood in the first scorer betting market when United travel to Belgium.

Match odds (first leg)

Club Brugge – 2/1

Draw – 12/5

Manchester United – 13/10
