We're just days from the start of the new Premier League season and here at Compare Betting Sites we continue our preview of the forthcoming campaign by looking at the betting prospects of four English heavyweights; Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester City and Liverpool finished a country mile ahead of the chasing pack last season and the bookies’ odds suggest we’re set for more of the same this time around. However, with new managers and a significant investment in the playing squad, could any of the other members of the so-called Big Six be set for a title challenge?
Arsenal have now finished outside of the top four for three successive seasons, their worst run since the 1980’s and in an attempt to get back into the Champions League they have also splashed the cash during the summer transfer window. Nicolas Pepe has been recruited for a club-record fee of £72m and alongside Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Pepe will forge arguably the most lethal frontline in England.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang claimed a share of the Golden Boot last season and he, along with Alexandre Lacazette will be expected to be there or thereabouts again in the coming season. Aubameyang is commonly available at 7/1 to claim a second successive Golden Boot, however SpreadEx are offering 15/2. French international, Lacazette, is a much bigger price at 25/1 but with most bookmakers paying out on the first four places, he could offer excellent each-way value.
Despite deadline day moves for Kieran Tierney and David Luiz, Arsenal’s Achilles heel remains in defence. However, with Pepe and co leading from the front and both Manchester United and Chelsea both in transition, Arsenal are good value to finish in the top four at 6/5 with several bookmakers.
Arsenal will be playing Europa League football again this season and after their heavy investment in player recruitment, the Gunners look a real bargain at 7/1 to win Europe’s second-tier competition. Manager, Unai Emery, is a three-time winner of the competition from his time in Spain with Sevilla.
This summer, Chelsea have seen their best player, captain and manager all depart Stamford Bridge and on top of that, the club were hit by a transfer embargo. However, Blues fans are surprisingly optimistic ahead of the new season.
Club legend, Frank Lampard, has been drafted in to replace Maurizio Sarri as manager and the current transfer ban means this season is something of a free hit for Lampard and his team. The new Chelsea boss will rely on many graduates from their much-celebrated academy. The likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Reece James will all feature prominently this season whilst Christian Pulisic has been brought in from Borussia Dortmund.
One thing that remains unclear at Chelsea is who will play up front. Abraham along with Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi are in contention for the lone striker role. Whoever gets the nod will offer unbeatable value in the Golden Boot markets, especially as each-way options. Giroud is a 50/1 shot with Unibet whilst the same bookmakers are offering 100/1 on Batshuayi. Abraham can be backed at 66/1 with Betway or SpreadEx.
The 2018/19 season was fairly successful for Chelsea. The Blues finished third in the Premier League whilst also winning the Europa League. Another top four finish is a very back-able 2/1 at Black Type. Their success in the Europa League means they’ll meet Champions League winners, Liverpool, in the UEFA Super Cup. Ahead of their meeting next Wednesday, Chelsea are 11/5 with most bookmakers to win the trophy for a second time.
Manchester United finished out of the top four for the fourth time in six seasons in the last campaign and after spending big in the summer transfer window, the pressure is undoubtedly on United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, to qualify for the Champions League.
The Norwegian is 8/1 with William Hill to be the first Premier League manager to leave, second only to Crystal Palace boss, Roy Hodgson, in that particular market. United are 11/8 with Betway to finish in the top four whilst they are a massive 40/1 to win the Premier League title.
Belgian forward, Romelu Lukaku, left Old Trafford for Inter Milan this summer and the pressure will be on the United frontline to replace the 26-year old’s goals this season. Lukaku was the Red Devils’ highest scoring attacker last season, finding the back of the net 12 times in the Premier League. Marcus Rashford is now first choice centre forward at Old Trafford but the England international will have to improve on the 10 league goals he managed last season. Rashford is currently 25/1 in the Golden Boot betting market.
After recruiting defenders, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to shore up their defence, David De Gea could prove excellent value in the Golden Glove betting. The Spanish international won the award in 2017/18 and is a massive 33/1 with Betfair and Paddy Power to reclaim the accolade.
At the mid-way point last season Tottenham Hotspur sat second in the Premier League and despite falling away in the latter months, significant investment during the summer transfer window will make Spurs a serious threat to Manchester City’s crown.
Having not signed a single player since January 2018, Spurs in excess of £100m to bring Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso to North London. With the European transfer window not set to close until early September, Spurs’ prospects could hinge on their ability to keep Real Madrid target, Christian Eriksen, at the club. Black Type are currently offering a huge 25/1 on Spurs to win the Premier League title; odds not matched anywhere else.
After another solid season at Spurs, the pressure is starting the build on Mauricio Pochettino to deliver some silverware. The Premier League could be a big ask, indicated by the 25/1 price. However, Tottenham Hotspur fans will be hopeful of lifting either the FA Cup or EFL Cup. Spurs have a strong tradition in the FA Cup having won the trophy on eight previous occasions. However, the last of those wins was way back in 1991. Spurs are 9/1 with Betfred to win the 2019/20 FA Cup. Tottenham are an even bigger price of 11/1 with Unibet to win a fifth League Cup.
Spurs’ hopes of winning any silverware in the coming season will rest on the shoulders of talisman, Harry Kane. The England international has finished as Spurs’ top scorer in each of the past five seasons and will again be expected to lead from the front. Kane is the bookies’ favourite to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot but could prove a snip at 4/1.
