We’re now just a week from the start of the new Premier League season and whilst the return of the weekend accumulator is on the horizon, for now football fans will be eager to get their outright predictions in for the coming season.
Over the next week we at Compare Betting Sites will provide our opinions, tips and odds on everything Premier League related. We start our season lowdown by looking at the champions, Manchester City.
Manchester City go into the 2019/20 season aiming for a third successive Premier League title, a feat that only fierce rivals, Manchester United, have previously achieved. City may not have matched the 100 points and 106 goals scored they’d amassed in 2017/18 but a haul of 98 points from 38 games saw Pep Guardiola’s side deservedly claim the Premier League title.
Guardiola has bolstered his options in midfield with the acquisition of Spanish international, Rodri, for a club record fee. The new £63m man is seen as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho in the City engine room.
Odds-on for another title win
Having accumulated a massive 198 points in the past two seasons it would take a brave man to bet against Manchester City winning yet another Premier League title. The holders are available at 1/2 with most bookmakers.
City became the first English club to ever complete a domestic treble last season, adding FA Cup and EFL Cup to their Premier League title. Betfair are offering a very tempting 17/1 on City to claim another domestic treble.
You can also back City to win both domestic trophies individually. Sportingbet are offering unmatched odds of 7/2 on another City FA Cup triumph whilst they are broadly available at 4/1 to claim a fourth EFL Cup in five years.
Despite claiming an unprecedented domestic treble, the 2018/19 season was bittersweet for Manchester City after yet more Champions League heartbreak. City were on course for a clean-sweep of all four trophies before being dumped out of Europe by Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling Champions League semi-final.
Being crowned Champions of Europe remains the ultimate ambition for the Manchester City owners and fans alike and the reigning Premier League champions have been installed as the pre-tournament favourites to win a maiden European title.
Manchester City are commonly available at 4/1 to win the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League however, Sportingbet have the edge, offering its customers 17/4.
City’s all-time top scorer, Sergio Aguero, will again be expected to lead Manchester City’s title challenge. The Argentine has breached the 20-goal barrier in each of the last six seasons and was the club’s top scorer in three of their four title-winning campaigns to date. Aguero is commonly available at 6/1 to claim the Golden Boot. Alternatively, William Hill are offering 8/1 on Aguero to win the Golden Boot and City to claim the title.
Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus are also expected to chip in with their fair share of goals in the forthcoming campaign. With each-way bets paying out for the first four places, backing either of City’s other forwards could prove a masterstroke. Sterling is 16/1 with RedZone, Sport Nation and SpreadEx whilst Jesus is a huge 33/1 with SpreadEx and Royal Panda.
With an incredible 36 clean sheets in two Premier League campaigns, could this be the year that Ederson finally claims the Golden Glove award?
The Golden Glove award is handed to the goalkeeper with the most Premier League clean sheets in a season. Brazilian, Ederson, has just missed out on the award in the past two seasons, finishing second behind Alisson last season and behind David De Gea a year earlier.
You can back Ederson to claim the Golden Glove at Evens with Betfair.
Incredibly, no Manchester City player has ever been crowned the PFA’s Player of the Year. Raheem Sterling was pipped to the award last season by Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk.
If one of Aguero, Sterling or Jesus score enough goals to claim the Premier League Golden Boot they will inevitably be on the shortlist for the top individual award. Whilst BoyleSports are offering huge odds of 16/1 and 66/1 on Aguero or Jesus respectively, Sterling is much shorter at 8/1. The England international can be backed at 9/1 with William Hill, however it is teammate, Kevin de Bruyne, that heads this particular market.
Belgium international, de Bruyne, missed large chunks of the 2018/19 through injury but with a full pre-season under his belt, City’s main creative force could prove instrumental in leading them to a hat-trick of Premier League titles. De Bruyne is commonly available at 6/1 to claim the PFA Player of the Year award.
The PFA Player of the Year award has a history of sentiment with Ryan Giggs claiming the gong in 2008/09 at the ripe old age of 34. Therefore, David Silva could have an excellent outside chance of winning in his final season in England. The City legend, has confirmed he will leave Manchester City at the end of the season and remains a 14/1 shot to claim this award.
PFA Young Player of the Year
Brazilian forward, Gabriel Jesus, is a front-runner for the Young Player of the Year award at 14/1 but we at Compare Betting Sites believe there is better value in the 16/1 on offer for teammate, Phil Foden.
England international, Foden, was recently described by Pep Guardiola as “the most talented footballer” he had ever seen. High praise indeed from a man that has coached the likes of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. With David Silva’s pending retirement and Leroy Sane’s possible move to Bayern Munich, Foden will expect a lot more game time this season as he’s fully integrated into the first team.
