This week the horse racing world will descend on the Berkshire countryside as Ascot Racecourse plays host to one of the UK’s biggest sporting events. The Royal Ascot festival will see some 300,000 race-goers treated to five days of top-class flat racing. Whilst Royal Ascot remains a glamourous festival of racing, for those not in attendance there are plenty of mouth-watering races to look forward to.
Here at Compare Betting Sites we will be previewing every day of the five-day festival, offering race previews and odds on all 30 races. Today’s preview includes odds courtesy of betting partner, William Hill.
14:30 - Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) (Str)
We kick off the week with a wide-open Group 1 one miler. Last year’s winner, Accidental Agent, should not be ruled out at 12/1 but Mustashry quite rightly heads the betting market. Sir Michael Stoute’s six-year old beat eight of Tuesday’s rivals in the Lockinge and is backed to follow that up with another win here. Laurens should be better for the run-out in finishing runner-up in the Lockinge and could provide the best value at 6/1.
Mustashry - 4/1
Le Brivido - 5/1
Barney Roy - 11/2
Laurens - 6/1
15:05 - Coventry Stakes (Group 2)
Threat was victorious on 1,000 Guineas day at Newmarket but there were only four runners in that race therefore the potential of this two-year old remains unknown. Trainer, Richard Hannon, is a big fan and the step up in trip so suit. However, our preference is for the lead Ballydoyle charge, Arizona. Aidan O’Brien has won this race on eight previous occasions and with Ryan Moore on board, Arizona could build on his promising form thus far. Arizona claimed a commanding eight-length victory at the Curragh last time out.
Arizona - 5/2
Threat - 10/3
Guildsman - 6/1
Monoski - 9/1
15:40 - King's Stand Stakes (Group 1)
Battaash - 15/8
Blue Point - 5/2
Mabs Cross - 8/1
Blue Point won this last year ahead of Battaash and Mabs Cross and that trio could be set for an equally thrilling battle this year. Blue Point has won three out of four races at Ascot and has won all three races in Dubai this year. However, we are tipping Battaash to reverse last year’s result after a hugely impressive win at Haydock recently. Mabs Cross who was third in that race at Haydock and here last year could provide excellent each-way value.
16:20 - St James's Palace Stakes (Group 1)
It’s form versus potential in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Too Darn Hot was the stand-out two-year old last year but has failed to make the step up so far this year, finishing behind Phoenix Of Spain in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
In a year that many expected Too Darn Hot to win at least one Classic he simply hasn’t kicked on since last year. Second in the Dante and second again nine days later in the Irish Guineas, trainer, John Gosden, has blamed that short turnaround for his below-par showing at The Curragh. He is confident that Too Darn Hot will rediscover his two-year old form to realise his obvious potential. However, we aren’t convinced!
Phoenix Of Spain was first past the post in the Irish Guineas and could repeat that success here. He has improved immensely since finishing behind Too Darn Hot in a Group 2 at Doncaster last year and is the one to beat here.
Pheonix Of Spain - 2/1
Too Darn Hot - 2/1
King Of Comedy - 6/1
Skardu - 10/1
17:00 - Ascot Stakes (Handicap)
Willie Mullins have won three of the last four editions of this race and has another big chance with Buildmeupbuttercup. The five-year old was a bumper winner with Mick Channon before switching to hurdles with current trainer, Mullins. Pulled up on most recent showing at the Punchestown Festival and is now tongue tied for the first time.
If Mullins doesn’t make it four wins in five years there will be plenty in with a chance in this wide-open race. Alan King’s Couer de Lion heads the betting market after an impressive win at Chester last time out. He’s up 5lbs for that win but remains a big threat.
If you’re looking for value at a bigger price then the 20/1 available on Ulster could be tempting. This impressive four-year old
Coeur de Lion - 13/2
Mengli Khan - 7/1
Buildmeupbuttercup - 7/1
Gunnery - 11/1
Batts Rock - 11/1
17:35 - Wolferton Stakes (Listed)
Elarqam - 9/2
Magic Wand - 9/2
Addeybb - 13/2
Latrobe - 7/1
Riven Light - 8/1
